New chief exec takes Nokia's helm

On June 1, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo takes over the top spot at Nokia, as the company enters a time of increasing competition, fast-changing technology, and pressure on revenues and profits.

He's already got a new strategy, according to some reports. Whereas his long-time predecessor, Jorma Ollila, relied on organic growth, Kallasvuo has signalled he'll be looking into partnership and acquisitions to fuel growth.

It was Ollila who transformed Nokia from a maker of rubber boots of all things, to one of the most recognized high-tech brands on the planet, and the leading cell phone maker. Kallasvuo has been with Nokia for 26 years, serving as CFO for a decade, and running the mobile phones unit, Nokia's biggest by volumes and profits, in 2004-2005.

He recently predicted Nokia's Enterprise Solutions group is on track to break even in 2007. The group targets enterprise IT groups with a range of device management software, middleware, new smartphone products, and networking gear.
