Shoretel upgrades UC software

* Latest release includes a client for the iPhone and a distributed database, along with other features

ShoreTel has released ShoreTel 11, the latest version of its unified communications software; as with previous releases, the upgrade is available for free to current customers with a ShoreTel support contract. Upgrades include a client for the iPhone and a distributed database, along with other features. With the release, ShoreTel has also changed the name of its desktop application from ShoreTel Call Manager to ShoreTel Communicator in order to more appropriately reflect capabilities that include UC.

Among the upgrades included in the release:

* The ShoreTel Communicator client is now available for the Web and for the iPhone, so ShoreTel users can manage communications from Macintosh computers and iPhones, along with BlackBerry and other devices. ShoreTel Communicator for iPhone is available from the iTunes App Store as a free download.

* Enhancements to the existing distributed database architecture have been added; for example, instances of the ShoreTel 11 database can be installed at remote sites, helping to alleviate potential performance bottlenecks and eliminate single points of failure.

* ShoreTel 11 has expanded QSIG support to help enterprise more easily integrate legacy PBX integration capabilities. (QSIG is an ISDN signaling protocol for legacy PBXs that controls features such as caller ID/line ID and call forwarding.)

Commenting on the latest release in a statement, Kevin Gavin, vice president of marketing at ShoreTel, said, "With this latest system software release, ShoreTel takes another giant leap forward in delivering on the promise of unified communications for organizations of every size. ShoreTel 11's enhanced distributed architecture, new iPhone client and extended support for legacy PBX systems all drive down deployment costs and TCO, while increasing reliability and flexibility."
