TouchPad fire sale such a hit that HP will burn another building

Details skimpy but announcement sure to stoke further demand

Never mind a better mouse trap; just sell tablets for a third of what they cost to build and the world will beat a path to your door.

That may appear to be the lesson HP is taking from the "success" of its $99 sell-off of discontinued TouchPad stock, but the company is actually attempting to quell the ire of those shut out during the first buying frenzy.

From an IDG News Service story on our site:

"Despite announcing an end to manufacturing webOS hardware, we have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand," Mark Budgell, an HP spokesman, wrote in a blog post.

The newly manufactured tablets will go on sale in a few weeks. He said a "limited" number would be made but couldn't say exactly how many. "We can't promise we'll have enough for everyone," he wrote.

Nor is there any assurance that the $99 price will hold this time around.
