Saks 5th Avenue store features 64 iPads in interactive display

iPad mosaic links to online images, video and tweets

Sixty-four iPad 2's and a bunch of Apple's high-end 27-inch Cinema Displays are being used to create an online storefront display in Saks' flagship 5th Avenue store in New York City.

TheLoop has the scoop. Instead of manikins or elaborate scenes created by window designers and dressers, the three Saks windows create a constantly changing online mosaic. The left and right windows use 9 of the much larger Cinema Displays; the middle window has the 64 iPads, linked to a local area network and coordinated to act as if they were one large screen, with each tablet showing a different part of the image.

The interactive showcase is a collaboration by Saks and, which provides the imagery, streaming video and tweet stream (just use the #StylelistatSaks hashtag and you too can appear on 5th Avenue). The whole project was designed and put together by Gin Lane Media, which among other things created a custom iPad app to run on the iPads.
