openSUSE Rolls Out openQA 1.0 Testing Framework

The new openQA tool provides automated, comprehensive testing of operating systems to catch and report on software issues and installation problems.

OpenSUSE announced the first public release of openQA, a new testing framework to automate and streamline the software testing process. According to the announcement, openQA is the only comprehensive testing tool capable of running tests on all levels of the operating system, from bootloader to web browser. The tool compares screenshots to reference images to identify and report any problems. Results are then displayed in a web interface, which is available for the openSUSE Factory development repository on openqa.opensuse.org, along with screenshots and videos of any problems discovered during testing.

Free and available under the GPL version 2 or later, openQA can test any OS capable of running on a virtual machine. Although currently the web interface is only available for openSUSE, openQA is cross-platform capable. The OS-authoinst software supports Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, FreeBSD, and OpenIndiana, and can also test MS DOS and Windows.
