Gartner: 50% of Web sales will come via social, mobile apps by 2015

Mobile apps are set to explode worldwide

ORLANDO -- As much as 50% of company Web sales will come through social and mobile applications by 2015, according to Gartner.

The increase will come as e-commerce vendors offer new context-aware, mobile-based applications.  Online sales increases will also be partly as companies move aggressively outside the US.  Gartner predicts that by 2013, 80% of North American and European online sellers will expand into Brazil, Russia, India, Africa, Japan or China.

Mobility and social networking have been two of the central themes at Gartner's Symposium/ITxpo this week.  Some of the key trends behind the online sales bounce include:

  • By 2014, there will be more than 70 billion mobile application downloads from app stores every year.
  • By 2015, 40% of the world's smartphone users will opt-in to context service providers that track their activities with Google, Microsoft, Nokia and Apple continuously tracking daily journeys and digital habits for 10% of the world population by 2015,
  • By 2016 the installed base of mobile PCs and smart phones will exceed that of desktop PCs.
  • By 2015, mobile application development projects targeting smartphones and tablets will outnumber PC projects by 4 to 1
