Major Internet outage only briefly delays griping via social media

RIM, Time Warner, Juniper, Comcast all targeted by angry Tweeters

RIM really can't win these days, taking the early hits for today's Internet outage that appears to have stemmed from router problems and issues within backbone provider Level 3's network, not within the BlackBerry network itself. But BlackBerry customers have last month's big outage still fresh in mind.

RIM hit Twitter with this post Monday afternoon, after getting peppered with complaints about BlackBerry service being down earlier in the day: "#TeamBlackBerry: A number of ISPs were affected by a global outage today, but BlackBerry systems are up and running."

Separately, the company issued a statement through more traditional PR channels:

"There was a global Internet issue this morning that impacted a number of Internet Service Providers (ISP) around the world. RIM’s BlackBerry Infrastructure was not impacted however, some customers may have experienced delays with their ISP. RIM continues to monitor the situation."

Time Warner took to Twitter around 10am eastern time via its TWCableHelp account: "We appear to be recovering from a large but brief internet outage affecting most of our service areas. Please attempt to connect again." Level 3 also took to Twitter with this upbeat post: "Hi everyone, we apologize to those affected today. Not what you want on a Monday morning! Working with all involved to investigate."

Twitter, meanwhile, buzzed and buzzed over the outage, which didn't last long and gave users a chance to vent when they got back up or got on via alternate devices and networks. A sampling:

hfrench: #Blackberry #outage. Nice way to start Monday. Let's see if the service stays on line. Maybe #RIM needs the #failwhale

@rattle1337: My hate for RIM burns with the fire of a thousand suns. I have had enough of this crap

@michaelnyc: Okay, who broke the internet?@m1a1vet: My Tweetdeck search column for "Juniper" is going a little nuts right now.@antonmccoy: I'm pleased I don't work at Juniper today. They've lost the internet! @sicklittlejag: Has no one really tweeted in the last hour? Well this #comcast #outage has really screwed my tweet stream over!

Over at the less mainstream North American Network Operators Group mailing list, the outage also generated discussion.
