iPhone 3GS production to reach 2 million units in 2011 holiday quarter

iPhone 3GS production is poised to reach 2 million units in the current holiday quarter and approximately 1.5 million units during the first quarter of 2012.

When Apple released the iPhone 4S a few months ago, it also chose to make the iPhone 3GS available for free with contract. This marked the first time an iPhone was ever offered at no cost and given the popularity of the 3GS when it was $49, it's not surprising that customers are snatching up the free model as quickly as Apple can make them.

A few weeks ago, the NPD group highlighted that the iPhone 3GS was the second most popular smartphone during the third quarter of 2011. Think about that for a second - a phone released during the Summer of 2009 was still besting every Android device out there in the Fall of 2011. That right there is a testament to the quality and attention to detail Apple infuses into its products, resulting in devices that are still desirable years after their release.

Digitimes is now reporting that Apple's iPhone 3GS production is poised to reach 2 million units in the current holiday quarter and approximately 1.5 million units during the first quarter of 2012.

Apple has been pushing the sale of its 8GB iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 pre-loaded with iOS 5 globally, and besides, AT&T has also been promoting iPhone 3GS to contract subscribers with zero subscription rates, the sources revealed.

Studies show that iPhone users tend to be more loyal than their Android counterparts and it's therefore imperative for Apple to bring in as many users into the iPhone fold as possible.

Lastly, Digitimes' source notes that production of the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 is expected to fall between 800,000 and 1 million units this quarter and between 500,000 and 600,000 units during the first quarter of 2011.

With the iPhone 4S sales getting off to an incredibly fast start and maintaining that momentum across the globe even 2 months out, Apple's 2011 holiday quarter will likely be the company's most successful iPhone quarter in history.
