After 13 years with Network World, I’ve decided it’s time to try something different. It has been a terrific experience. As an editor here I’ve had a front-row seat for the many changes in networking – which is to say I’ve seen the many changes to IT, to my own industry of publishing, and to the way we all do our business and go about our lives.Think about cloud computing, mobile devices, social networking sites – all these things and more have transformed the world, and they all require computer networks. Obviously, a publication called Network World is covering the heart of that transformation, though the impact of the changes are felt everywhere. The site’s title is almost redundant – the network is the world, the world is the network. When the transformation really hit my own industry, I was lucky enough to get on the right side of it early on. I started at Network World in 1998 as a reporter covering network management, but by 2000 an opportunity opened up on the online side (there were two different sides back then, print and online, with some intermixing) and I jumped at it.The opportunity was in email newsletters. We hired freelancers to write the newsletters and sent their articles out in the body of the email. The idea almost seems quaint now, but you can think of them as blogs before blogs really took off, and we built a nice little business out of it. At their height, we had 54 individual titles going out.A few years later, other opportunities on the website opened up. We started more blogs, we created the Subnet communities, we recorded podcasts and videos. We reached out with social media – LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, etc. I got to be a part of all of those efforts, all while delivering the network news and information that I hope you found useful, interesting and insightful. You are in good hands here at Network World. The editorial team led by John Dix is superb, and it has been my privilege to work with them these many years. It has also been my privilege to serve you, the reader, the network manager and the IT professional. I hope that I served you well.

My new assignment is as a senior managing editor at CSC. If you want to keep in contact, follow me on Twitter.
