Teenager dies after 40-hour video game binge

He booked a private room at an internet cafe and played Diablo III for two-straight days without eating, until he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An 18-year-old Taiwanese man was pronounced dead earlier this week after he collapsed following a 40-hour marathon playing the Diablo III video game at an internet cafe, the United Daily News broadsheet reported.

A report from The Australian claims the teenager, known so far only by his surname Chuang, booked his own room at an internet cafe in Tainan in southern Taiwan on July 13, where he started playing the popular game Diablo III. Two days later Chuang was found asleep on a table in the same room. Shortly after he was awoken by the attendant who discovered him, he reportedly stood up, took a few steps, and then collapsed, according to The Australian. The attendant then called an ambulance, which rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The report claims that Chuang hadn't eaten during his two-day gaming session, adding that local police believe his death could be the result of cardiovascular issues resulting from "long hours in a sedentary position." However, autopsy results have yet to be released.

Amazingly, Taiwan saw a similar story roughly six months ago, when "a man in New Taipei was found dead, slumped in a chair facing a computer with his arms still reaching out for the keyboard after playing [an undisclosed video game] for 23 hours," according to The Australian.

"The cause of death was reported as cardiac arrest," the report adds.

Diablo III, incidentally, is massively popular. After its May release, Diablo III broke the record earlier this year for fastest-selling PC game of all time, selling more than 3.5 million copies in its first 24 hours on the market.
