All I want for Christmas is BYOD

Win8 Touchscreen Ultrabook for the wife...check. Android 4.x tablets for the kids...check. But for me? All I want for Christmas is BYOD.

BYOD may seem like a simple gesture, but it is so much more than that, and offers the potential to drive massive process and business innovation and provide a critical element of employee engagement and attracting and retaining talent. When viewing BYOD as a key source for business innovation, I find the answer to my dilemma about my birthday and Christmas desires: I need employer-sponsored gadgetry. Outside of business hours, I am still entangled with business systems both in terms of checking my messages and handling tasks but even beyond that as I access things like my corporate subscriptions to Safari Books Online and quick reads or access my lab; a system that is not empowered to do both work and play has little value to me. This is where BYOD has tremendous potential to attract talent and maximize the potential for business innovation from the workforce, using BYOD to provide employees with a selection of compute devices  or alternatively provide a stipend model would empower me to get the device I want, making me happier and more engaged while also expanding the reach for my employer to empower employees to both become more productive individually and provide increasing experimentation, which is simply the best way to drive innovation.

The next time you need a refresh for your corporate laptop, wouldn't it be great to be able to select a convertible or perhaps an Ultrabook (these are on my wish list), or whatever system you think will make you the most engaged and productive employee. And since most will also use their tablets to drive business productivity, it would make a lot of sense for businesses to incent these investments with a stipend as they drive not only more happy and productive employees but can feed back into driving process innovation that can empower the entire organization.

Now, to end this on a cheesy note, everybody sing along ... 'all I want for Christmas is BYOD, BYOD yes BYOD' ;)
