Compass-EOS, a start-up shipping a silicon photonics-based router, this week closed a $42 million round of funding with the help of existing investor Cisco. Other existing vendors participating in the latest round include Comcast Ventures, Pitango Venture Capital, Benchmark Capital, Northbridge Venture Partners and Marker LLC.
Compass-EOS launched and shipped its r10004 router in March 2013. It is based on a proprietary photonic chip-to-chip interconnect, called icPhotonics, that is said to enable development of routers and routing resources with higher densities and capacities, but requiring less power and space.

Compass-EOS says icPhotonics is also designed to provide terabit-per-second connectivity between line cards, and that each r10004 can serve as a modular router building block for the deployment of scale-out routing, software-defined networking and network functions virtualization.
Cisco has said that silicon photonics will usher in Terabit Ethernet capabilities.
NTT Communications and CERNET have deployed the r10004 system. Compass-EOS has raised $160 million to date.
The company will use the new funding to continue development and augment customers support, and sales and marketing. New investors include an unidentified, US-based private equity fund and RUSNANO.
