Earlier this week, rumor had it that Apple was going to release iOS 4.2 this Friday, along with updates to OS X and iTunes. And though Apple did in fact release an OS X update a few days ago, iPhone, iPod, and iPad users hoping to upgrade to iOS 4.2 are still waiting around empty handed.

iOS 4.2 brings with it a number of enhancements, but iPad users in particular are eagerly anticipating the update as it will finally give them features iPhone and iPod Touch users have been using for some time now - namely the use of Folders and multitasking support. Another iOS feature to be aware of includes AirPlay which enables iOS users to stream audio to AirPlay enabled devices and video to an Apple TV. Also worth mentioning is AirPrint, which will finally allow iOS users to wirelessly print documents directly from their device. But again, the real folks dying for the update to drop as soon as possible are iPad owners.

So what's the latest on that pesky iOS 4.2 update?

Earlier today, a report surfaced stating that Apple's iOS 4.2 update had been pushed back to November 16th. Shedding more light on the issue, MacStories reported that the reason for the delay was a troublesome wi-fi bug that Apple deemed serious enough to put the entire update on hold.

Basically, even if the iPad manages to successfully connect to a local network, the connection is lost after a few minutes. This seems to be the most common problem among users, although some can’t simply use Safari at all. The bug has been reported to Apple, and they apparently decided to delay the release of iOS 4.2 to fix the bug.

And just when it seemed that the iOS 4.2 mystery had been solved, along came yet another rumor from The Telegraph explaining that Apple's impending iOS update won't drop until November 24th.

The iOS 4.2 software update had been expected today, but Apple has delayed it release until Nov 24, a reliable source has told the Telegraph.Apple has refused to comment on the speculation, stating only that it had said the software update would be released in November. But a source that works closely with Apple said that the company had shelved its original plan to release the software update today, and had instead pushed back the launch until later this month.

So until proven otherwise, iPad users will have to tough it out for about 2 more weeks.
