Bank of America's online operations down ... yet again

UPDATED: Outage has been ongoing for some since early this morning

Bank of America's online banking site has been on the blink since early this morning for at least some customers, including this one.

The bank's customer service representatives on Twitter have been apologizing profusely and promising customers that everything possible is being done to fix whatever is ailing the site.

Reads one such message posted 14 minutes ago: "I'm very sorry about this. Pls be assured we are working to restore capability as quickly as possible."

From an ABC News online report:

The Charlotte, N.C. -based bank would not say exactly how many of its 29 million online banking customers could not access their accounts in the early afternoon. The problem appeared at around 7 a.m. Eastern time, according to spokeswoman Tara Murphy Burke.

The bank's ATM network was operating normally, Burke said.

To say this has been a chronic problem for Bank of America would be an understatement.

As long ago as November 2006, the bank earned the dubious distinction of being ranked No. 1 in terms of downtime, according to Web site performance monitoring company Pingdom.

More recently, there was this major outage from last January. This one from a few months prior. And this one. And this one. And this one. (Keep in mind those are just some from the Buzzblog archives.)

And so the angry tweets pile up at a head-spinning rate:

Not very happy w/Bank of America at the moment - haven't been able to access my accounts via internet or phone all day - on a PAYDAY!! #bofa

My Bank of America web site has been down all day! i wonder how much this is going to cost me in fees!

Bank of america's website is pissing me all the way off!!

And just in case you're wondering, that spokeswoman told ABC that the situation has nothing to do with Wikileaks.

(Update, 4:15 p.m.: I was able to load the log-in page ... after a wait of seven full minutes. Not sure I'd call that being up; maybe getting off the canvas.)

(Update, 6 p.m.: Home from the office and Bank of America seems to once again have its online act together. Your mileage may vary, of course.)
