Another black mark against the white iPhone

Passion for white brings out the dark side for Chinese consumers

A scuffle over buying a white iPhone at an Apple retail store in Beijing, China led to a shattered glass door, and injuries to customers and at least one Apple employee. The incident happened over the past weekend.

[This "madness" could have been predicted if people had only read "iMoby: the hunt for the great white iPhone," by Herman Cox; the book Herman Melville would have written if he were alive today. You can read an excerpt right here.]

Two weeks ago, the white iPhone 4 went on sale in China, and this past Friday, so did the iPad 2. Both have created heavy demand, with long lines outside Apple's stores.  According to the news report, one man tried three time to cut to the head of the line for the white phone, and was escorted from the store by Apple security. The man shoved and grabbed one of the security workers, show pushed back. The man fell to the ground. Then things really got ugly: the man's mother started shoving the security workers, according to a source.

Apple workers decided to close and lock the door, but that triggered a angry response by a group of waiting buyers: they shook and grabbed the door which then shattered, injuring an Apple employee.

According to that person, a man had tried three times to cut in line to buy the white iPhone 4, and had been escorted aside by Apple security. The man then shoved and grabbed one of the security workers, who pushed back in defense, the source said. The man then fell to the ground, refusing to get up, and his mother then got involved by also pushing the security workers, according to the source.

Apple employees then decided to lock and close the door to the store. A group of people responded by shaking and grabbing the door. The door then shattered, which injured an Apple employee, the source said. Business returned to normal later in the day.

Apple apparently had sold out of both iPad 2 and the white phone by Monday, at least according to the local Apple website.
