SolarWinds makes available free configuration change management tool

SolarWinds Network Config Generator helps network engineers speed and simplify configuration change tasks.

SolarWinds Tuesday announced it had added another free tool to its product portfolio. SolarWinds Network Config Generator, designed to automate configuration change tasks, is the most recent application the network management company plans to offer for free.

SolarWinds executives say that the software will help simplify and speed the processes and automate the tasks associated with configuration and change management on network devices. Designed for network engineers, the software includes config change templates to alter interface descriptions and configure virtual LANS, switch port security, NetFlow and IP SLA. Network Config Generator also lets network engineers enable features of network devices with a graphical user interface and helps save time by generating config change commands with pre-defined templates, SolarWinds says.

"Commands for tasks like VLAN configuration -- which are executed less frequently -- can be easily forgotten and are a pain to rebuild," said John Stephens, SolarWinds' head geek and vice president of technology, in a statement. "With Network Config Generator, network engineers can create a change template to re-use for future configurations, saving time and frustration as well as ensuring consistency in configurations across devices."

Network engineers can download the free application from SolarWinds' Web site here. And customers interested in more advanced features could invest in the vendor's Orion Network Configuration Manager (NCM) software.
