Cisco Captures Two Leaders Magic Quadrants in Security

Gartner ranks Cisco SSLVPN and Secure web gateway as industry leading solutions

Gartner has recognized Cisco's SSLVPN and Secure Web Gateway solutions as leaders in their respective technology. To this end, Gartner has positioned Cisco into the coveted leaders Magic Quadrant for each technology. These two categories arguably have the most industry buzz of all security technologies making this achievement even more prestigious right now. The Gartner magic quadrants are frequently used by corporations as part of their decision criteria when making new technology selections. Cisco now boasts leadership in four Gartner magic quadrants for security technologies. They are SSLVPN, Secure Web Gateway, NAC, and Email Security. Contrary to a few industry naysayers, it seems that Gartner is validating Cisco's true innovation and leadership in the security marketplace. Never before has cisco been so favored by Gartner in their reports. In a past blog, I wrote about customer validation of Cisco security leadership as demonstrated in the market share gains Cisco security has had recently. It seems like there is quite a bit of momentum building over in the Cisco security business unit lately. Gartner provides the following requirements for a vendor to be selected for its leaders magic quadrant:

Leaders demonstrate balanced progress and effort in all execution and vision categories. Their actions raise the competitive bar for all products in the market, and they can change the course of the industry. To remain in the Leaders quadrant, vendors must excel in performance, scalability and protection, and must dominate in sales. To stay on the right side of the chart, leaders (and visionaries) must follow courses that are competitively disruptive, not only ahead of the curve, but offering features that remove significant roadblocks to vendor sales and buyer implementations.

The SSLVPN leaders magic quadrant only includes two vendors, Juniper and Cisco. This is the first time that Cisco has been positioned in the leader quadrant, a large feat indeed given their late entry and false starts into this market. The Cisco ASA is Cisco's flagship SSLVPN product offering. However, Cisco also offers the functionality in its ISR routers.

For a full report on Gartner's SSLVPN Magic Quadrant report see here. It is also the first time that Cisco has been selected for the leaders quadrant of the secure web gateway (SWG) magic quadrant. Cisco offers two solutions in this space, Ironport Web Security Appliance (WSA) and Scansafe web security SaaS.

For the full magic quadrent report for SWG see here. So what are your thoughts on Cisco's move into the leaders quadrant? Do you view this as evidence that Cisco is making the correct moves with its security products or do you still see large gaps?
