iPhone 4 pre-orders start today as Apple and AT&T struggle to keep up with demand

Apple new iPhone 4 will hit stores on June 24, but pre-orders for the device began earlier today. And while you might assume that AT&T and Apple have finally gotten things down to a science, what with this being the fourth iPhone release and all, you'd be giving them to much credit. Well, either that or perhaps iPhone pre-orders are simply significantly higher than anyone expected.

Apple's online ordering system has been temperamental since pre-orders began, though things seem to be running smoothly at the time of this writing. Meanwhile, Boy Genius Report is reporting that even AT&T's internal network is struggling to keep up with all the iPhone pre-orders rolling in.

All things being equal, the iPhone 4 is fast looking like it's going to be a monster. Especially when you consider that people are queuing up in line at Apple and AT&T stores across the country. Dan Frommer, writing for Business Insider, hits the nail on the head when he writes "This isn't even to take them home or anything -- it's for the right to wait in another line next Friday (to pick up the phone)."

It's almost comical.

In other iPhone pre-order news, it appears that the white model of Apple's next-gen iPhone is not currently available for pre-order. A leaked AT&T memo which made the rounds yesterday indicates that the black iPhone 4 will be the only model available on launch. The white iPhone 4 will reportedly be available later this Summer, but there's now word as to when pre-orders for the device will begin.

Lastly, if you want to avoid the inevitable chaos at Apple and AT&T retail stores, you might want to pre-order and subsequently pick up the iPhone 4 from Radio Shack and Best Buy. Both retailers are accepting iPhone pre-orders starting today, and Radio Shack in particular has an attractive deal. Take in your old iPhone 3G or 3GS, and you can get an accompanying trade-in credit towards the purchase of the new iPhone 4. A working condition iPhone 3G will net you $100 while a working condition iPhone 3GS will net you $200 in credit towards the new iPhone 4.

And just to make sure you're up to snuff, AT&T recently announced that any iPhone user eligible for an iPhone upgrade in 2010 will effectively be eligible for subsidized iPhone pricing today. Some are speculating that this generous upgrade offer is AT&T's way to keep as many subscribers in the fold as possible in light of an impending iPhone migration to Verizon. But with Apple and AT&T still trying to keep up with pre-orders, we should probably take things one step at a time.
