How to plan capacity in a virtual world

VKernel this week will make available its Capacity Modeler software as a free download, but only until December 31, 2009. According to a company press release, the free perpetual license will offer customers a no-cost alternative to expensive competitive offerings.

"Early reviews of [VMware vCenter] CapacityIQ say it's a 1.0 product with only basic capacity planning and 'what if' capabilities that are very similar to those found in our Capacity Modeler," said Alex Bakman, founder and CEO of VKernel. "We've been developing VMware management and optimization solutions for years and understand that users require more serious solutions like our Capacity Analyzer and Optimization Pack. To illustrate this point, we are giving our Capacity Modeler away freeom to anyone who is contemplating using CapacityIQ."

The vendor says the free perpetual license for unlimited CPU sockets will let IT managers perform capacity planning tasks, including 'what-if' modeling scenarios. The download can also enable IT managers to proactively prevent problems and perform predictive capacity impact analysis reports, VKernel says.

Available now, VKernel Capacity Modeler can be downloaded for free here.
