Free online services benchmark cloud provider performance

Apparent Networks looks to take some of the mystery out of cloud computing providers.

Apparent Networks this week added to its already free cloud performance management application with a free online service designed to help cloud customers measure the quality and performance of services delivered by cloud computing providers.

Cloud management wares multiply

Cloud Performance Center (CPC) is a Web site that cloud customers can visit to learn more on the performance of cloud service offerings from vendors such as Amazon or Google. The site via a graphical user interface can show how performance changes or improvements based on physical location. Customers can see real-time or historical data on network performance issues that could impact cloud delivery services, Apparent Networks says.

"Based on the visibility that our technology provides across the entire network path, Apparent Networks is in a unique position to deliver actionable intelligence that will help develop an informed cloud computing strategy," said Jim Melvin, president and CMO of Apparent Networks, in a statement.

CPC offers free informational services such as the Cloud Portal Scorecard, which offers "region-by-region service delivery performance scores." The free service also includes cloud and Internet performance reports and advisories that the vendor says it will regularly produce and distribute.

"Effective application service delivery across the Internet is an essential part of successful cloud computing," said Peter Christy, principal analyst at the Internet Research Group, in an Apparent Networks press release. "By providing network performance data for cloud services, as well as advisories on technologies and issues that could impact the effectiveness of applications, services like Apparent Networks' Cloud Performance Center are essential tools for IT teams responsible for cloud applications."
