Cisco's security challenges, according to Gartner

Living up to the heady claims of Cisco MARS by Cisco sales reps, and a lack of a rich roadmap for feature improvements to Cisco's enterprise firewall products are among the challenges faced by Cisco in the enterprise network firewalls space, according to Gartner's latest magic quadrant for this space. The report also pushes Juniper in the 'leaders' quadrant for enterprise network firewalls (disclosure: Juniper issue a press release about its news, with a link to the Gartner report.)

Gartner claims that it rarely sees Cisco on competitive firewall shortlists among its customers, but that Cisco is more often selected when customers want to add security to existing Cisco infrastructures. Where Cisco firewalls were shortlisted, but not selected, quality and usability of the management console, Cisco Security Manager (CSM), were the factors most often cited, adds Gartner.

On the flip-side, Gartner notes that Cisco has a significant market share in security, including having the largest market share for firewall appliances, and is viewed as a significant (second highest) enterprise competitive threat by the vendors surveyed by Gartner. The report also notes that Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance is a "good" replacement for Cisco PIX, which was discontinued this year. Cisco has "strong channels, broad geographic support and the availability of other security products, such as the Cisco Security Agent (CSA), its Monitoring, Analysis and Response System (CS-MARS) SIEM; and IPS products (4200 series and IDSM)," adds Gartner.

Gartner says Cisco has one of the lowest basic support fees of the vendors it surveyed, but it has the highest  product price in dollars per Gbps.
