Cisco Data Center "Big Bang" Announcement - YYYYYAAAAAWWWWWNNNNNN.....

Just a quick blog today about Cisco's Data Center "Blast" or "Big Bang" announcement yesterday....in one word.....YAWN.

Don't get me wrong, there is some interesting stuff there. This....hold on a second....YYYYAAAAWWWNNNN....big announcement has some interesting products:

  1. Nexus 2000 Fabric Extender - we'll be using this ourselves in our new data center
  2. Nexus 7018 - bigger Nexus 7000
  3. Nexus 5010 - smaller Nexus 5000
  4. EnergyWise - hook more stuff up to the network to save energy costs

But it's certainly not a ....wait, there it is again....YYYYAAAAWWWNNNN....."big blast". The Nexus 2000 was a must have since no one can build a DC with all 10 GbE top-of-rack switches and then have to buy another switch line - 4948s, 4900s, 3750s (gasp!) - to connect regular servers. The 7018 is just a bigger switch. The 5010 is just a smaller switch. There's nothing exciting there, just product differentiation to hit other segments of the market. And EnergyWise...."we want to save you money by cutting energy costs....just hook more stuff up to the network". Ok, I like the idea of saving money on energy and, being a network guy, I like the idea of more things connected, but this doesn't strike me as revolutionary.....damn it, there it is again...YYYYAAAAWWWNNNN.....it's just a decent idea. Now, I will probably blog about EnergyWise and the Nexus 2000 soon because they are good ideas and good technology. But this is not a "Big Bang" or "Blast". Too much marketing this time.....YYYYAAAAWWWNNNN.
