With no disrespect to gypsies or flea markets, it is the opinion of yours truly that Cisco's portrayal of the Used Cisco market is actually accelerating the success of HP ProCurve, why do I think so? Because earlier this week Cisco Marketing Vice President - Marie Hattar blogged about being wary of competitor press releases showing phenomenal growth numbers (view HP ProCurve press release touting that ProCurve's market growth nearly quadruples industry rate). Frankly, it puzzles me why ProCurve is growing at such a fantastic rate. Has ProCurve been lucky? Or is Cisco just being lazy?
Price, Price and Price The answer I believe is that Cisco has been too darn successful at tarnishing the image of the affordably priced used/refurbished secondary-market for Cisco equipment. Sure Cisco has its own authorized refurbished program (CARP), but the majority of its inventory consists of slow moving products that are not in demand. Furthermore, the inventory of Cisco's authorized refurbished program is just not competitively priced so that it can cost-effectively compete against new HP ProCurve products. Let's face it, the next CEO of Cisco is not going to be the individual who makes CARP a stunning success. The winner of the tarnished image that Cisco has so successfully made for the affordably priced used/refurbished secondary Cisco market?
