Grid will be Internet x 1000, Cisco says

Anyone wondering why Cisco is targeting smart grid utility network buildouts -- aside from the $20 billion opportunity -- might want to read this dispatch from the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal. According to Cisco, smart grid could be up to 1,000 times the size of the Internet due to the simple fact that every home has electricity but not every home has Internet access.

The article also indicates that Cisco now sees smart grid as a $100 billion opportunity -- not the $20 billion pittance it intially cited. Shocking...
