Your Voice on managing Voice (and Video)

Operational management of IP Communications

Enterprise Management Associates is mid-way through collecting input for a research project to study how IT teams are deploying and managing latency/loss-intolerant IP communications, including VoIP and Video technologies such as telepresence and desktop video conferencing. Video keeps getting attention as the killer app of the future. Cisco's recent pronouncements project a 10-fold growth in video communications traffic between 2008 and 2013 - the fastest growing all internet traffic categories. Some early results of our research are interesting. For instance: • 60% of respondents indicate that primary ownership of IP communications lies with the network engineering and operations team. • Only 32% of shops are monitoring quality of IP communications • 70% of those using telepresence and High-Def IP video conferencing are using dedicated network links for these services - one clear way to avoid shared-resource congestion but not the cost-effective converged approached touted by many vendors. • Improved communications and collaboration outweigh reduced travel expenses as cost savings realized by deploying IP video conferencing. We'd like to add your viewpoint! You can take the survey here. I'll publish more details in upcoming posts, but qualified participants can also get a full copy of the results.
