Cisco WAAS rival Riverbed looking to buy?

WAN optimizer might be interested in Juniper's Peribit technology

Riverbed might be on the acquisition trail, according to this dispatch from TheStreet.com. The WAN optimization company, which competes with Cisco and its WAAS product, has been the focus of speculation for years as a target for acquisition -- not a shooter.

But TheStreet.com says Riverbed may be interested in pursuing Juniper's Peribit technology which can now be had for 1/10 of what Juniper paid for it a few years ago -- $337 million.

Riverbed needs a new flavor for its WAN optimizers as competition -- including Cisco WAAS -- has made its offerings a little stale, according to the story. But if Peribit is worth only 1/10 of what Juniper paid for it, can it really make that much of a difference?
