Apple board to meet next week to decide on Schmidt replacement

It's been a little over a week since Apple announced the resignation of Google CEO Eric Schmidt as an Apple board member, but that vacancy isn't likely to remain open for long. The remaining Apple board members will reportedly convene sometime next week to discuss possible replacements for Schmidt.

It's been a little over a week since Apple announced the resignation of Google CEO Eric Schmidt as an Apple board member, but that vacancy isn't likely to remain open for long.  The remaining Apple board members will reportedly convene sometime next week to discuss possible replacements for Schmidt.

One of the more likely candidates is undoubtedly Apple COO Tim Cook, who might be offered a board position to further ensure that rival companies don't make moves to lure him away, which has happened at least twice before.  Over the past few months, Cook has emerged as Apple CEO Steve Jobs' right hand man, with Jobs choosing him to handle Apple's day to day operations while he was off treating an unspecified medical condition.
