What's new with Exchange 2010 and OCS R2

While every client I work with seems excited about Exchange 2010, few know much about it or how much it differs from Exchange 2007. If you remember the jump from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007, then Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 is almost as significant.

Gone are CCR clusters, replaced with DAGs; a totally different, and better, paradigm. Powershell 2.0 is a lot more powerful than its predecessor. The CAS role steps forward into a much more prominent role as well. Maybe the coolest feature, paired with Outlook 2010 you can now open mailboxes from multiple Exchange orgs through the same profile! FINALLY!

There are also some pretty significant unified messaging, UM, changes and increased integration with Office Communications Server R2, OCS. First is voicemail transcription through the Exchange 2010 UM role. As OWA grows into looking and acting more like Outlook, Microsoft has added some really cool features for OCS integration. You can now see presence icons and interact with users through OWA. Check out some great screenshots here.

The Exchange team has a good overview of E2010 RC1. Once you check that out, go download the bits!
