Trend Micro has had a close partnership with privately held Third Brigade for two years in which Trend Micro has integrated Third Brigade's host-based intrusion-prevention/firewall software into the Trend OfficeScan antimalware product line.(Compare Enterprise Firewall products.)

"There is tremendous customer acceptance of this technology," said Trend CEO Eva Chen during a conference call that also included Wael Mohamed, Third Brigade president and CEO.

Chen outlined a strategy to evolve Third Brigade's software to meet the security needs of customers operating in cloud environments and data centers with virtualized systems.

Mohamed noted that Third Brigade now has software designed "to prevent attacks from one virtual machine to another" and the goal is to continue to develop the software to meet security requirements in "next-generation virtual applications."

It has not yet been decided whether Trend Micro — which intends to leverage the Third Brigade headquarters to establish the Trend Micro Canada office — will retain use of the Third Brigade name as a brand after the deal officially closes later in the second quarter.

But executives for both firms say the plan is to continue to market and support Third Brigade's product line, which now includes software specifically designed for virtualization environments.

Founded in 2004, Third Brigade now has about 50 employees and counts about 250 enterprise customers worldwide.
