NetEx optimizes VMware environments

* NetEx goes virtual, Internap guarantees its CDN performance

As 2007 winds down, network optimization players are readying new products and services for the new year. Among them is NetEx, which is launching WAN acceleration software designed for the VMware virtualization platform.

NetEx unveiled a version of its HyperIP data-acceleration software for VMware ESX Server. HyperIP for VMware is a software-only product; existing iterations of HyperIP are also available in an appliance configuration that can be deployed on industry-standard servers.

The HyperIP product family is tailored for business continuity and disaster recovery applications that depend on long-distance remote TCP/IP data transmissions. It’s focused on optimizing TCP data for backup, recovery and data replication applications, for example. In particular, HyperIP products can handle long-distance data transfers at rates above OC-12.

The software-focused design of HyperIP for VMware lets enterprises deploy it in virtualized environments. WAN optimization products that run on proprietary hardware can be limited in performance scalability, which precludes their use in virtualized hardware environments such as VMware ESX, NetEx claims. With HyperIP for VMware, customers can scale performance up to 600x with no hardware upgrades, the company says.

HyperIP for VMware will be available in the first quarter of 2008 with entry-level pricing starting between $6,000 and $8,000.

In other WAN optimization news, Internap announced plans to offer a 100% uptime performance guarantee for its content delivery network (CDN) services. Internap in the past offered service-level agreements (SLA) promising 100% uptime for its other network services, such as its managed server and storage offerings. But this is the first time it’s guaranteeing CDN service performance.

According to the company, its acquisition of VitalStream makes that possible. Internap integrated VitalStream’s CDN with its own MIRO route-optimization technology. MIRO monitors Internet backbones around the world in real time and chooses the best route for traffic based on conditions.

According to Daniel Golding, vice president and research director at Tier1 Research, heavy competition in the CDN market makes it important for players to differentiate themselves with features such as SLAs.

"The CDN industry is the most competitive segment of the entire Internet infrastructure market," Golding said in a statement. "Potential customers are looking hard at CDNs for differentiation, especially in the key areas of performance, availability and reliability. CDNs must raise their games in order to remain competitive, especially when it comes to SLAs."
