Web-based collaboration suite is aided by chat, Web page creation

There is one more user application that comes with Google Apps, but it isn’t web-based. Rather, Google Talk is a stand-alone application that must be loaded on the local machine. It is a chat client with some voice functionality built in, as well. Once authenticated to your domain, it displays the same contact list available in Gmail. Like most chat clients, it shows your “presence” status, alerting others as to whether you are busy or free to talk. Google Talk allows for “calling” other users and initiating a two-way voice conversation. Further, you can leave a “voice message” for users who aren’t currently logged in. The chats can be saved for future reference, and are stored within the Gmail application. One unique feature of Google Talk is “music trends.” This allows users to not only display what music they are listening to as part of their presence status, but also “votes” for that song on Google’s site where the most popular groups and songs are listed.

The Google Page Creator application allows administrators a simple and quick way to create basic Web pages without knowing HTML or other Web languages. The editor shows you what the page will look like as it is being edited. It can be saved for more edits later, or you can publish it for others to see.

Once published, you can “tell your friends,” which is a function to send the URL via e-mail to selected recipients. As more pages are created, they can be linked together by clicking “link” and selecting the appropriate page from the list. Images, files, other links, e-mail addresses and even Web gadgets from the start pages can be added with the click of a button. You can’t do scripts or databases, but the application will give you the basics for creating a basic Web site.
