Review of Vaio Mouse Talk (model VN-CX1/B), which combines a compact portable mouse with a VoIP handset.

Product name: Vaio Mouse Talk (model VN-CX1/B)

Company: Sony

Web site

Price: About $80

Description: The lightweight Sony Mouse Talk combines a compact portable mouse with a VoIP handset. When used as a mouse, the Mouse Talk device includes 800 dpi resolution and scroll wheel. To use as a VoIP handset (including connecting to Skype), the device opens up like a clam shell to reveal the handset. The device includes echo cancellation features and can be used as a speakerphone as well.

Why it's a Toy of Summer: Bag space is often limited while on vacation, especially if you're trying to sneak in some technology toys. The Mouse Talk lets you bring two device in the space of one, offering a portable mouse (much better than relying on your notebook's touchpad) and a Skype handset.

Quick Review: Your enjoyment of this device depends a lot on whether you like the novelty of combining two seemingly separate devices like a computer mouse and Skype handset. If you do have enough room in the bag to carry a separate VoIP handset and a travel mouse, there are other devices out there that offer better functionality for those individual purposes. But for what it's worth, the Mouse Talk does a good job when it's a mouse, and worked decently as a VoIP handset.
