A Better Windows World ... Really!

I'm feeling a bit nostalgic today, so I'll quote (sort of) the great Louie Armstrong. OK, picture me crooning (it's not that bad I have a decent voice) to the tune of What a Wonderful World:

I see server rooms going green, and security that's tight,

Great Admin tools, and an O/S that works right,

And I think to myself, What "A Better Windows World"

As you may have reasoned, the focus of my blog is on things that can make the Windows enterprise more efficient, functional, and easier for the IT professional. A big component of my blog are the tools and upgrades, both from Microsoft and others

One great component of that was a company everyone in the Windows world knows, Sysinternals. When Microsoft purchased Sysinternals (or more correctly the company's co-founder Mark Russinovich) in 2006, like many I thought we were witnessing the end of an era. Happily, that has not been the case. Microsoft has continued to improve upon and build new tools for the Sysinternals website.

Taking time to develop new tools and update existing tools, Sysinternals remains, in my opinion the IT pro's first line of defense when they do not have the tools available to get the job done.

I cannot count how many times I have had users complain that they could not start Word or Outlook or some other third-party application. Thanks to Mark's pskill utility, my staff and I were spared the chore of going to the desktop to stop the 3- 20 instances that are running in the background on the machine. I owe hours of my life to that one tool alone.

It's great to see that the tools are updated and features are added regularly. As this blog goes on, I will take some time to feature some of the tools from time to time. Moreover, I hope to not just feature them but also bring you some unique scenarios that will help you to see why they are so great. On the other hand, if you already know how great they are, perhaps you will share your own appreciation of them.

Until then remember (this is where I start singing again...)

I watch my son play his Wii and I know

Technology will just continue to grow

And I think to myself, What "A Better Windows World"

Yes, I think to myself, What "A Better Windows World"
