Halo 3 mania – the biggest pre-ordered game, ever

Microsoft Game Studios confirmed that the ultra hyped Halo 3 has gone “gold” meaning it has been sent off to manufacturing sites. This puts it on track for its September 25 launch date. The third installment of the series has already racked up more than a million units of preorder sales, Microsoft says. This makes it the fastest-selling pre-order game in history.

Some retailers even expect it to be sold out by the time it hits stores. Halo 3 has movie-like appeal. Consumer products are being co-branded with it – for instance, Mountain Dew will offer Halo 3 Mountain Dew Game Fuel.

The drink has got an extra boost of caffeine – above the usual high-powered Mountain Dew -- so that gamers can stay up all night to play. 7-Eleven will launch Halo-3-branded Slurpe cups. 7-Eleven will team with Mountain Dew and Doritos for a Halo 3 sweepstakes. The grand prize is a voice role in the upcoming Xbox 360 video game.

Rumor also has it that Sept. 25 will see a massive number of IT folks and other game lovers coming down with the Halo 3 flu -- ehem -- calling in sick so they can stay parked on the couch playing the game.
