Cisco customers have been kept in the dark about the little known ability to leverage the NetFlow and NBAR technologies that currently exist as part of their Cisco devices to gain better control over their network infrastructure. NetFlow data exported from Cisco switches and routers can help network managers harvest valuable information about traffic patterns. Application monitoring, user monitoring, traffic engineering, port informatics and QoS metrics are some of the benefits that NetFlow can deliver.

Since NetFlow does not export the payload, it places a very low overhead on the routing device.

NBAR on the other hand works based on deep and stateful packet inspection. It uses payload-based signatures to detect protocols and applications intelligently. NBAR can deliver amazing value in determining the traffic usage by corporate applications (like Citrix) and non-business critical traffic (worms and peer-to-peer), all in real time. NBAR is also an invaluable aid in enabling precise Quality of Service (QoS) treatment. The NetFlow-NBAR combination is extremely powerful in terms of the application recognition it lends from layer 2 to layer 7.

From an application recognition perspective, NetFlow-NBAR are complementary technolgies - while NetFlow categorizes applications based on port and protocol, NBAR is effective in categorizing even applications that use dynamic ports - like peer-to-peer applications.

"As the only all-software solution to deliver both NetFlow and NBAR capability, ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer enables network administrators to have end-to-end visibility over their network infrastructure," said Raghu Ramanujam - product manager for ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer. "NetFlow Analyzer offers a wide range of value added features like real time reporting, IP based departments and locations, alerting based on threshold violation and IP based application categorization. NetFlow Analyzer is available for a free 30 day trial with no limitation on the functionality."
