Virtualization Center Series: Microsoft Hyper-V Release Candidate In Server 2008
Thursday Microsoft released Windows Server 2008 Release Candidate. That means we are 180 days away from shipping bits. I started my download of the RC (about 2.5GB) while writing this blog post and I'll be testing Server 2008 over the weekend. Here's Microsoft's updated info on Hyper-V's capabilities as of the new RC.
Most specifically I'll be trying out the latest bits for Hyper-V in Server 2008, Microsoft's virtualization competitor to VMware and XenSource. One of Hyper-V's capabilities I really want to try out is Quick Migration, which allows you to move virtual instances with "minimal downtime" (how minimal is minimal, I'll find have to see for myself.) Snapshots of images is also important as is Linux integration, which according to Microsoft's site, is for SuSE and other Xen-enable Linux's (not sure exactly what that means yet.) I'm also really interested to checkout the Virtual Switches networking feature, which includes VLAN support. Here's a brief video of the networking features and storage (support for up to four SCSI controllers per VM) in Hyper-V.

The standalone Hyper-V Server isn't slated to out as part of Windows Server 2008. I believe will be more important and likely to be used than running Hyper-V inside a Windows Server, but I guess that remains to be seen.
