100 Million Vista Users?

Bill Gates, during his annual opening speech at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, claimed there are now 100 million Vista users. According to this story in ComputerWorld, he didn't offer any details about the origin of that nice, round number.

The real question for me is how many happy Vista users are out there. Most of the people I've talked to, from college students up through senior IT people in large companies, don't like Vista and don't like the fact they've been forced to use it. I've yet to meet an enthusiastic user happy to have Vista running.

New computer? You get Vista in most cases. Those vendors that offer rollbacks to XP won't say how many they're actually shipping, but I'm sure the vast majority of their systems ship with Vista.

The question now is whether the upcoming Vista Service Pack will accelerate Vista deployment. After all, those people waiting for SP1 should jump right onto the Vista bandwagon, right?

My prediction is that SP1 won't accelerate the Vista rollout appreciably. We'll be able to check by about July.
