Cisco makes WAN optimization announcements at Networkers Europe

On the same day that rival Juniper bowed out of the load balancing application acceleration market, Cisco at its

Networkers Europe 2008 conference in Barcelona, Spain this week, released an addition to its Application Control Engine. The Cisco ACE 4710 Appliance is aimed at small and midsize deployments and supports up to 2Gbps of application traffic and 50 virtual devices in a single appliance. According to Cisco, the inclusion of its FlashForward acceleration technology enables the device to  eliminate the network delays associated with embedded Web objects such as JavaScript files - resulting in up to 500 percent faster Web application performance.

Other application acceleration products announced at the show include:

* TheCisco Data Center Assurance Program for Applications (DCAP for Applications) that tests and validates enterprise software applications over Cisco's application delivery network infrastructure.

* Cisco WAAS Mobile, bringing application acceleration to mobile and remote workers.

* Application Profiling Service,  a custom design and support service that helps customers profile their applications' performance, security and availability status, and recommends application delivery technologies.

* Cisco at the show also launched the ASA 5580 addition to its ASA line of security appliances. Read more about that product here.
