SQL Server 2008, er...2009?

2009 keyboard button
Microsoft's blog for SQL Server posted a clarification about SQL Server 2008's upcoming launch in February. It's not actually shipping then, just getting launched. (Remember when those dates meant the same thing?) The Release Candidate isn't slated for availability until Q2 08, with the Release To Manufacturing coming in Q3 08.

Is this another product release date slip Microsoft is try to slip by us? Will SQL Server 2008 become SQL Server 2009? Well, Microsoft certainly has built a reputation for slipped quarters and even years in their software releases. That's no news. Is Microsoft trying to tell us something about SQL Server 2008?

It's only a guess at this point. Whatever the answer, what is most important is that Microsoft ship a quality product release, not software plagued with bugs, errors and setbacks. Vista's had enough of those. Let's not repeat that movie. Too much of our data is at stake.

Note to self: Don't put the year in product names.
