Now Juniper's planning a Cisco MARS attack

Some Juniper news that escaped the attention of most of the media late last month was its OEM announcement with IT

management company Q1 Labs, which was one of Network World's 10 management companies to watch. Juniper plans to rebadge Q1's management software, which Enterprise Strategy Group analyst Jon Oltsik, writing in his blog on, says is an alternative to Cisco MARS. According to Oltsik: "Unlike other security management firms, Q1 is really focused on networking and security, and concentrates on competing with Cisco's Monitoring, Analysis, and Response System (aka Cisco MARS). Juniper gains a product and partner built from the ground up to fight against its primary competitor. This should make Q1 popular with field sales very quickly."

Oltsik says the deal will help Juniper enter into the enterprise by using security management as the hook.

However, Oltsik doesn't detail how Q1 Labs' product stacks up against Cisco MARS, which is pretty well established.

Can a start-up compete with an established product such as Cisco MARS?
