Cisco: More mega acquisitions to come

Businessweek is running an interview with Cisco Vice-President Ned Hooper (39), who is now in the role that helped Mike Volpi achieve celebrity status in the industry.

Hooper is the new man in charge of business development, which includes mergers and acquistions and venture capital investments - many of the responsibilites that former Cisco exec Volpi held as he helped Cisco grow to the behemoth it is today. The difference is that back in Volpi's day, Cisco was clearly focused on carrier and enterprise networks, picking up companies in manageable chunks - now its focus goes broader into the consumer, Web 2.0 and unified communications markets.

Cisco's recent $3.2 billion acquisition of WebEx is likely to be one of many of that size further down the road. Hooper tells Businessweek: "Larger transactions "give us a level of scale from the start, rather than building from scratch ... It's the only way to move the needle at a company of this size."
