Recommended Reading: Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Update

Cisco provided an update to its annual Visual Networking Index (VNI), predicting that IP Traffic will triple from 2014 to 2019 with much of the growth driven by increasing mobile access and demand for video services. The data shows that by 2019, there will be about 3.9 billion Internet users, representing 51% of the world’s projected population.

The uptake in IP video is especially noteworthy, as it is expected to represent 80 percent of Global IP Traffic by 2019. The evolution of advanced video services such as ultra HD and video centric mobile to mobile applications will create new bandwidth and scalability requirements for service providers. Desktop and personal videoconferencing are projected as to be the fastest growing business Internet services with a compounded annual growth rate of 23.5% from 2014-2019, growing from 76 million users last year to 220 million users by 2019.

Consumer IP video traffic will be 84% of consumer IP traffic by 2019, while business IP video traffic will be 63% of business IP traffic for the same period. Overall business IP traffic, which includes web, backup, VoIP, etc., will double between 2014 and 2019; however, consumer IP will be 82 percent of all global IP traffic by 2019.

The analysis also showed that over two-thirds of global IP traffic will originate from mobile connections (including both mobile data networks and Wi-Fi) by 2019—with more than 14% of monthly IP traffic from cellular connections, and 53% of monthly IP traffic coming from Wi-Fi connections globally. By comparison in 2014, fixed traffic accounted for 54% of IP traffic, while Wi-Fi accounted for 42% and cellular 4% of traffic.

The full survey shows regional and country-specific IP traffic projections; breakdowns by application type; and global IP traffic projections by media type including fixed line, Wi-Fi, and mobile data networks. The survey is based on independent analyst forecasts, real-world mobile data usage studies, and Cisco's own estimates for global IP traffic and service adoption.
