Lifesize adds WebRTC to its collaboration options

Lifesize, a division of Logitech, has announced a new WebRTC powered app that provides a calling platform for anyone using Google Chrome. The Lifesize Cloud Web App gives access to the Lifesize Cloud collaboration services including HD video, chat and screen sharing for all.   Because WebRTC uses native browser support, app enables connectivity without requiring any software downloads. At launch, the app works with a Chrome browser with the capability expanding to other browsers, including Internet Explorer and Firefox in the near future.

Lifesize also announced that its cloud service, now offers a voice- and content-only web conferencing mode, eliminating the need for third-party web conferencing services; the new addition offers provides screen collaboration with up to 40 participants.

Craig Malloy, Lifesize founder and CEO commented in a statement on the development saying, “The implications of WebRTC are profound. By 2019, there will be more than six billion devices supporting WebRTC, and Frost & Sullivan recently predicted that it will be one of the most disruptive trends in the enterprise telecommunications industry.”

He continued, “Until now video collaboration tools haven’t met the needs of the growing number of organizations migrating to cloud-based apps. CIOs can now scale video – and empower employees to freely reach all internal and external stakeholders – without increasing complexity or demands on infrastructure and support.”

Our observations: WebRTC is gaining momentum as a communications medium, as noted in our 2015 WebRTC State-of-the-Market Report. In our survey, 47% of respondent organizations were already using WebRTC or planning to use it this year. The report also showed that 55% of WebRTC use cases centered on collaboration that included support for voice, video, and screen sharing-- placing the Lifesize integration with these services in line with what users want and expect from their collaboration partners.
