Telogis delivers consumer-level application friendliness for the bluest of blue-collar workers

I'm a sucker for a "technology for the real world" story. Telogis delivers just that, making professional drivers' lives easier.

Telogis is a vendor focused on some of the more mundane roles in the workforce. In the case of Telogis, this is around connected vehicles and mobile workforce enablement. What those buzzwords really mean is that Telogis delivers applications within industrial vehicles, equipment, and people, that obviates the necessity for the traditional paper, pen, and clipboard. The company was established in 2001 and is headquartered in California but with a very distributed model, including development centers in Austin, Texas and Christchurch, New Zealand.

The company is selling products for a distinctly middle-majority user base. As such, it should come as no surprise to learn that their customer base is global, and not centered in the usual geographical hot spot for tech, Silicon Valley. Telogis claims customers in over 100 countries.

The company is today launching a new lineup of iOS applications that are aimed at bringing both new functionality and far better user experiences to its end users. This announcement follows on from Apple's recent announcement that it is working closely with a host of different software vendors to increase the uptake of its own devices within the industry - from POS vendors to accounting firms, from productivity apps to mobile workforce ones, Apple sees more of a B2B model in its future. Telogis was one of the vendors chosen by Apple, and the fact that they focus on a massive untapped market can't have hurt their chances.

Telogis' compliance application ensures the accuracy of government-regulated driving hours and mandated vehicle inspections. Another application, Telogis Navigation, provides specialized truck-specific directions that keep drivers safer and more well-informed.

The company is even moving into more edgy areas, including gamification. Telogis Coach invites competition by scoring the driving behaviors, safety or productivity metrics, and also makes it easier drivers to be identified and recognized for doing well and setting great examples for teammates.

“Working directly with Apple to build extraordinary user experiences into apps like Telogis Coach brings our customers a level of ease, familiarity and functionality that makes work on an iPad, iPhone, or Apple Watch more productive and more fun,” said David Cozzens, chief executive officer at Telogis. “The mission-critical nature of connecting everything in a business to the Internet of Things – vehicles, people and customers is a given, and we continue to innovate by delivering the same high-quality iOS user experience to enterprise customers that they expect on the consumer side.”

Telogis has partnered with some of the big names of the automotive industry, including Ford, General Motors, Hino, Mack, Volvo, and Isuzu. All of these partnerships have aimed to connect vehicles and equipment with the people who use them for work by building software applications in at the factory level.

This is a busy area, and the auto companies themselves are pushing these areas at the same time. It will be interesting to see how much opportunity is left for Telogis as a third-party vendor.
