Nutanix, Lenovo hook up

OEM deal will produce hyperconvergence appliance next month

Hyperconvergence wunderkind Nutanix this week said it lined up server titan Lenovo as an OEM reseller under a non-exclusive arrangement. Lenovo will offer Nutanix software on a new line of hyperconvergence appliances to debut next month.

Hyperconvergence integrates storage, server and virtualization into an appliance to reduce IT cost and simplify data center management, and offer a private cloud alternative to public cloud services. Nutanix is a leader in this space and has been rumored to be a potential acquisition target of Cisco’s.

Nutanix officials say they want to provide Amazon Web Services for the enterprise. They also say they’ve lined up more Fortune 1000 customers in the past nine months than in the four years since the company was founded.

Lenovo is a $40 billion maker of computers and a leading provider of data center servers. Lenovo has a partnership with storage giant EMC and acquired IBM’s x86 server business a year ago.

Lenovo’s global sales force and channels, and in particular its penetration in China, will boost Nutanix’s profile and market reach worldwide.

Nutanix has a similar relationship with Dell.

The Lenovo/Nutanix appliance coming next month will run nearly all workloads, the companies say, including enterprise applications, databases, virtualized desktops, and big data analytics. It will be sold through Lenovo direct and indirect sales agents worldwide.

The companies say they will also invest in platform engineering and development, and go-to-market initiatives.
