Hewlett Packard Enterprise is developing an SD-WAN offering for service providers to host for their enterprise customers. The SD-WAN is based on HPE’s ContexNet technology obtained from last year’s acquisition of ConteXtream.
ContexNet is an OpenDaylight-based SDN controller for service providers implementing NFV infrastructures for virtualized network functions. HPE will ostensibly be competing with Versa Networks and other companies targeting service providers for VNF-based SD-WANs.
HPE disclosed the SD-WAN offering during a presentation at this week’s Open Networking Summit in Santa Clara. Presenter Ajay Sahai, HPE head of technical and product marketing, said it is in trials with service providers but would not discuss other details or timelines for the SD-WAN release.
HPE is also demonstrating the SD-WAN at ONS.
UPDATE: An HPE spokesperson states in an e-mail that the company's SD-WAN presentation and demonstration is a proof-of-concept or use case, "not a new HPE product offering."
