BellSouth Broadband Buildout. Say that fives times, real fast. Alcatel and Redback are mumbling it in their sleep after the Bell awarded each a piece of its next-generation IP video network. BellSouth tapped Alcatel’s 7330 DSLAM and Redback’s SmartEdge 800 Service Gateway as components of a fiber-to-the-curb/copper-to-the-home network. BellSouth says a combination of fiber and DSL will furnish more than 12M bit/sec of bandwidth over a single copper telephone line and more than 24M bit/sec over a bonded pair. BellSouth says it also passes more than 1 million homes with fiber.

Level 3 plans to phase out its (3)Tone VoIP service. The carrier said it will support it through June while developing a transition plan for its 100 resellers and their customers. The move comes amid a fast-growing, rapidly evolving market for VoIP services.
