What's your backup score?

Quantum announced on Wednesday a new web site that allows IT managers and backup administrators to rate the effectiveness of their backup procedures as compared to industry best practices and other IT organizations. The site, asks eight questions about key backup requirements and provides a score based on how well a company does meeting those requirements. After completion of the questionnaire participants have the option of receiving a detailed report giving additional background information on their scores.

Quantum expands SMB backup portfolio

According to Steve Whitner, marketing manager for Quantum disk backup products, the goal is to encourage discussion of issues about backup, recovery, disaster recovery and long-term retention of data. Quantum’s hope is that the site will become a catalyst for improving data protection policies. A longer-term goal of the project is to build a database that will allow comparison of results between different organizations.

The idea is to allow meaningful comparisons of results among the broad IT community as well as between organizations in similar industries or with similar types and amounts of data, helping them find optimum solutions to backup problems. The current backup score site is the first step for this project, and Quantum expects to build on it as the project moves forward.

According to Whitner, an additional goal of the project is to build an online community of users to discuss backup issues with each other and with experts in the field. Quantum is seeking additional sponsors to make this a vendor-neutral site.
