A video platform for the mobile enterprise

With the “consumerization of IT” introducing a flood of personal mobile devices into the workplace, enterprise networks are bearing an unanticipated burden.

A recent Harris Interactive survey commissioned by Qumu, a business video platform provider, found that 25% of all online Americans say they’ve watched news clips at work, with another 15% copping to watching viral videos and 12% saying they’ve watched videos on social networking sites (so you know those are mission-critical!).

No problem, you say? Well, a 90-second video clip is 700 times larger than a simple email, according to Qumu, which is based in San Bruno, Calif.

The survey also showed that 61% of online Americans say companies should allow employees to use the mobile device of their choice for work-related activities such as viewing documents and email or watching company videos. Sounds reasonable, except there are more than 30 combinations of video formats to support for mobile devices.

Add it all up and you’ve got a real challenge for network managers. In response, Qumu recently released an enterprise video-management platform designed to get the workplace video chaos under control.

The Qumu Video Platform is designed to enable the central management of video content, while also allowing video to be embedded in almost any business application, mobile app or portal.

According to Qumu, its platform allows enterprises to securely distribute videos to a wide range of clients, including desktops and mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads and Androids. It also can be integrated with Microsoft SharePoint, IBM Websphere and Blackboard.

Qumu also has added social media features to the video platform designed to allow employees to easily upload content from mobile devices and to share video securely.

Enterprise users of Qumu’s video platform include Sprint, Dell and AMD.
