Mitel and Vonage upgrade their portfolios

Two product updates to discuss today: Vonage announced the availability of a free app for iPhones to enable one-touch international dialing, while Mitel has released new management software for its Mitel Communications Director (MCD).

MCD is the foundation of Mitel’s Freedom architecture, designed to give access to communications applications using a single, cloud-ready software stream. MCD can be can be deployed on industry standard servers, including virtualized server environments. The latest release, MCD 5.0, adds new features optimized for medium- to large-size enterprises and industries such as hospitality including:

• The ability to scale Virtual MCD so a single instance will support up to 2,500 users.

• A streamlined process for system installations, and simplified ongoing administration with features like fully synchronized Active Directory integration.

• Support for large-scale hospitality properties, with a centralized deployment model.

• The option to deploy MCD on an industry-standard server with fully redundant components.

Commenting in a statement, Ron Wellard, the EVP and general manager for Mitel Communications Solutions, said, “Through numerous conversations with our channel partners and customers, we created MCD 5.0 to deliver a host of significant design changes to more effectively address the needs of our large customer base.”

In other news, Vonage has added a free downloadable app for the iPhone that offers subscribers access to the company’s “Extensions” service. A similar app for Android devices was launched in September. These new Vonage Extensions apps allow customers to extend Vonage’s international calling plans to their smartphones, letting users dial international phone numbers directly through their existing contact list. The international calling apps are available for immediate download at the iTunes App Store and Android Marketplace. Customers can register for up to two mobile Extensions through their online accounts. Vonage provides a VoIP service to about 2.4 million subscribers.
